Let’s be frank for a moment and tell it as it is: not too many people in the market for an Alfa Romeo Giulia will go for the full-on Quadrifoglio for one too many reasons. In Europe, for example, the 2.2-liter turbo diesel is the best-selling engine.
Given this reality check, tuning shops are much obliged to squeeze more ponies out of it to make a buck. One such specialty outfit is BR-Performance, who took the 2,143 cc JTDm turbo diesel to a rather meaty 232 PS (229 horsepower). That’s a helluva lot of ponies from the fuel economy-minded Giulia, even when compared to the 2.2-liter diesel-engined Veloce Q4.
Impressive though it may be, but BR-Performance got bettered by Squadra Tuning from the Netherlands. Be it the 136 PS, 150 PS or 180 PS variant of the 2.2-liter engine, with either the 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic developed by ZF, the Nunspeet-based company has got you covered. Only recently, their development on the 2.2 JTDm turned to fruition with a maximum bump of 62 PS (61 horsepower), i.e. 242 PS (239 horsepower) squeezed out from the 180 PS (176 horsepower) turbo diesel engine.
Oomph goes up as well, to 520 Nm (332 lb-ft) compared to the standard tune of 450 Nm (384 lb-ft). When matched to the automatic transmission, the additional output morphs the Giulia into a rather quick sedan. 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration has yet to be tested by Squadra Tuning, but the company is adamant 100 to 200 km/h (124 mph) takes 18.5 seconds. This, in turn, equates to an 8.5-second quicker sprint than the bone stock model.
The price for all this added performance? Only €590. That tiny dribble of money also goes on a recalibration of the 8-speed box. More specifically, Squadra Tuning adjusts the throttle response in neutral and drive “on two points.” The electronic brain of the tranny is also programmed to be more permissive when downshifting, especially when shifting with the paddles.
