Alessandro Zanardi, the Italian racer that is also a Paralympic athlete, has won the third Gold Medal of his career.
The BMW brand ambassador has won the H5 category of the time trial challenge in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the para-cycling competitions. His previous two Gold medals were won at the London games in 2012, where Zanardi also earned a Silver medal.
The time trial hand-cycling event involves two laps of a ten-kilometer (6.21 miles) course, totaling a distance of 20 kilometers (12.42 miles). Zanardi accomplished the fastest time after completing the race in 28 minutes, 36 seconds, and 81 milliseconds.
He managed to beat the opponent in second place by 2.7 seconds, which is a pretty small time difference over that distance.
After the race, which was the first of three that Zanardi is competing in Rio, the Italian athlete has stated that he feels “fantastic to enjoy the taste of gold once more.”
The 49-year-old athlete explained that the stadium and facilities in Rio are built where the Indycar circuit used to be, and he says he was always fast on that track, but never won a race there. With this win, Zanardi feels he has received an opportunity to correct that.
He also stated that he had made a plan with his trainer for this event, and that he managed to win the race thanks to sticking to the strategy. In the first lap, Zanardi was in third place, and the athlete who was first had almost 20 seconds ahead of him at that time.
Somehow, the Italian racer gathered his strength and willpower and sped up. Thanks to a sprint towards the end of the challenge, he won the race by just 2.7 seconds, beating Stuart Tripp, who had led to that point.
Today, on September 15, Zanardi is involved in another Paralympic event, a hand cycling road race. Tomorrow, on September 16, 2016, Zanardi will compete in the third event he has entered in Rio, the team relay. We wish him all the best in both events.
