Akrapovic’s Renegade M5 Is Taking on the GoldRush Rally

A while back we were writing about a special BMW M5 that was prepared for the Gold Rush Rally. It was a stunning appearance, especially due to the oversized logos on it that were pointing in one direction alone.

With the event in full swing, we decided to take a closer look at what this car is wearing and who is responsible for putting it together. As you probably already guessed, Akrapovic had a thing or two to say in its making.

Actually, the car belongs to the company and was wrapped in that specific livery especially for this event, to stand out in the crowd. By the looks of things, you can’t really miss take it for any other car, that’s for sure.

The guys actually might’ve picked the perfect car for such an event that covers an extensive distance over the course of a few days. Going from Las Vegas, Nevada to New York in a week, requires both power to go fast and comfort to make sure you don’t need a chiropractor session after the race. The M5 provides that perfect combo.

With 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque coming from the 4.4-liter V8 engine under the bonnet, the super-sedan is capable of a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and an acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) that takes just 4.4 seconds. That’s for a car that weighs nearly 2 tons.

But this is no ordinary M5 either as it’s fitted with the Competition Package that raises the power output to 575 HP and makes subtle changes to the chassis, steering and rear diff.

Getting back to the changes done by Akrapovic here, that exclusive wrap you see in the photos was done courtesy of Troy Lee Designs and applied by Protective Films Solutions. Using the company’s traditional colors, the overall look of the car gets a unique style.

The wheels they picked had to fit in the picture so they went for HRE’s S101 model in 20” and white, gold and black mesh to go with the rest of the car.

The house specialty of the company was added to the mix, in the shape of a full Evolution Titanium Exhaust that adds a further 10 HP to the mix while taking down 23 lbs of the total weight (10.4 kg). Oh, and then there’s the sound... You can check that out in the video below.
