Accord, Acura Brand Boost Honda's March US Sales
The Honda brand itself showed a 5.3% increase in demand, as 121,938 cars were sold last month.The new Accord range of models was the prime contributor, with more than a quarter of sales: 36,504 units, or 36.4 percent more than a year ago.
The second best-selling Honda was the Civic, with 27,665 of these compacts being sold in March, about the same as last year, though sales of the Civic Hybrid were down. This might have something to do with the Consumer Reports's findings about the model. Last month, they said while that the Japanese hybrid comes with a serious drive battery problem, that has led to about 20 percent of 2009 and 10 percent of 2010 models needing at least one replacement over 12 months.
"Our core models, Civic, Accord, CR-V and Odyssey, continue to lead the industry where it counts, in retail sales," said John Mendel, executive vice president of Sales at American Honda. "It's particularly rewarding to see Accord and Civic winning new customers against a headwind of competitor incentives and value-reducing fleet sales."
As for the Acura brand, they reported March sales of 14,100 units increased 26.3 percent compared with last year. The new RDX sets its eleventh-consecutive monthly sales record, up 284.8 percent from last March, while the TL and RLX sedans performed equally well.
