Probably no one will ever confuse a Mercedes-Benz with an Acura, but it is possible that some people will make a connection between the LED headlamps used by the two carmakers in the future.
This is the first time that our spy photographers have caught a 2019 Mercedes-Benz Class Coupe (C205) facelift testing, and it's also the first time that we can have a good look at its new headlights.
As you can see, their outline will remain identical, but the interior graphics suggest that Mercedes-Benz will switch to something entirely different. No less than eight LED projectors inside each headlamp make them look somewhat similar to a doubled version of those Acura “Jewel Eye” LED headlights.
That is not the only peculiarity concerning the two black pre-production prototypes with U.S. license plate holders, though. If you look closer, you can probably spot a couple of ancillaries around the brake discs, which in theory should signal that at least one of the cars is powered by a hybrid engine of some sort.
Judging by the exterior appearance, we're guessing that we're talking about the all-new 2.0-liter four-cylinder, part of a new generation of mild-hybrid engines set to arrive in 2017.
Dubbed M264, the powerplant is combined with a 48-Volt electrical system, a small electric motor and a twin-scroll turbocharger with an electric wastegate actuator. No official numbers have been announced, but Mercedes-Benz says that it will offer “around 100 kW per liter.” In layman horsepower terms, that is equivalent to around 272 PS or 268 HP.
A new generation of inline-six diesel and gasoline engines should also make its way under the hood of the facelifted C-Class, in both Coupe and Sedan flavors. Also thanks to the integration of a 48 V electrical system, the gasoline ones will also get an electric supercharger to boost output without also adding lag.
That said, apart from the redesigned headlights and bumpers, you shouldn't expect too many design surprises from the facelifted C-Class Coupe, as most of the novelties will reside under the hood. The model should be officially unveiled in the first half of 2018, as a MY2019 on most markets, just in time to take on the second generation of the BMW 4 Series.
