Internally referred to as the XV50, the current Toyota Camry is getting a little bit old now. Having started production in 2011 for the 2012 MY, the mid-size sedan is still wildly popular in its segment. But even though the Camry is the best-selling car in the U.S. for 2015, it is high time for Toyota to improve the recipe.
The main photograph featured in this story is the all-new Camry, teased by Toyota more than a month before its first public outing at the Detroit Motor Show. Other than the XSE lettering affixed next to the taillight, a date (January 9), and a promise regarding its design (“Prepare to stare”), Toyota refrained from letting anything else slip about the all-new Camry.

Happily, however, the spy photographers caught the XV60 Camry doing its thing on more than one occasion. Additionally to the hints provided by camouflaged prototypes, a certain someone published a photo of the new kid on the block in racecar clothing. More to the point, the redesigned car Toyota will be running in the 2017 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. All these clues are clear indicators the XV60 Camry will be a looker. Slated to roll into dealer lots in fall 2017, the 2018 Camry is underpinned by the automaker's TNGA platform.

Designed for Toyota and Lexus applications coming in front-, rear- or AWD configurations, the new backbone will help the Camry shed some weight over the XV50 generation’s 3,240 pounds (1,470 kg). At launch, the 2018 Camry is expected to be matched with the AR family 2.0-liter turbo-four found in the Lexus NX 200t, as well as a 3.5-liter N/A V6. It’s possible that Toyota will continue offering the 2.5-liter N/A I4 as the run-of-the-mill engine. Like in the 2017 Highlander, the Camry’s 3.5 V6 unit is due an 8-speed automatic.

A TRD-tuned version of the 2018 Toyota Camry could also make the cut, flaunting no less than four exhaust pipes in the Ford Fusion Sport’s face. Of course, a hybrid take on the next-generation Camry is in the works too.
