Rolls-Royce has begun road testing the prototype of the successor of its Phantom flagship.
Our friends at SB-Medien have provided us with a large photo gallery of the car, which has been spotted both on the move and standing still. If you check out the gallery, you’ll be able to compare the upcoming Phantom to the ongoing BMW 7 Series. Spoiler: the Phantom is huge in comparison.
The Rolls-Royce Phantom being tested could be the extended wheelbase variant, as it looks very long.
While the camouflage hides almost everything except the windows, the front grille, and the lights, we do not see a significant change in the design language. After all, few carmakers are as conservative in their design as Rolls-Royce is.
However, even the big Rolls has gone through its share of design changes, although they are subtle. The car’s proportions will naturally stick to the company’s golden rules, but the new generation of Phantom does feature small changes on the rear end, along with a slightly modified shape for the front bumper.
While we must note that this is the first 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom prototype spotted on the road, the design of the car might be more different once the deceptive camouflage is taken off.
We also know that the new Phantom will feature an aluminum space-frame architecture that will eventually be used by every model in the brand’s lineup. Thanks to the new platform, the Phantom will be lighter, have an increased rigidity of the body, and bring an increased range with it.
The current generation of the Phantom has been on the market since 2004, which makes it long overdue for a successor.
Since Mercedes-Benz has revamped its Maybach division with a top of the line model and Bentley is preparing a more luxurious Mulsanne, the timing for a new Phantom could not be better.
However, we must note that Rolls-Royce is not necessarily afraid of competition, as it has a pretty loyal customer base. That said, rival models could attract new customers away from a Rolls if the British brand does not change its flagship.
