Last time we spied the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV, the prototype had just made it onto the road. We’ve now come across it once again and this time the novelty comes from inside the car.
This is a test mule and the only viable clue it offers on the production model is its length - as you can see in the images, we are dealing with a Phantom body that has been shortened.

What this usually means is that we can ignore the interior, as test mules do not introduce new dashboards. Nevertheless, the heavy camo we can clearly see covering the dash, as well as the more massive silhouette indicate this vehicle is already using the new cabin, or, at least, parts of it.

Rolls-Royce has always spoiled its customers with a melange between lavish and minimalist in terms of interior and they won’t stray all that far from that path on this occasion.

Rolls-Royce's new age

Nevertheless, just as the front fascia of the Cullinan should be the boldest styling move of the brand, at least considering what we’ve seen in recent times, the dashboard should be more innovative compared to what we’ve seen so far.

The go-anywhere nature of the SUV means the interior will also tip the balance a tad towards practicality.

Then again, the Cullinan will take the unconventional side of Rolls-Royce much further than that and the powertrain department is perhaps the best example.

The standard engine is expected to be an evolution of the Phantom’s 6.8-liter V12. Nonetheless, the engineers are already working overtime to test a plug-in hybrid powetrain.

We can only think about Bentley, who has confirmed that its upcoming Bentayga SUV will be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and will thus lead to a future line-up where every model will offer this.

The Cullinan, which borrows its name from a South African-found diamond mounted on the Queen's sceptre and included in the Crown Jewels, will enter production in 2017.
