Land Rover is preparing an entry in the niche segment started by BMW with the X6. Yes, we are writing about the coupe-styled SUV market, which is not a traditional market segment, like regular SUVs.
The prototype in question is called the Range Rover Sport Coupe, and is expected to come to market next year as a 2018 model year vehicle. As you can observe in the photo gallery, the car in question is an early prototype, which is undergoing high-speed testing on the Nurburgring and surrounding areas.
We know the vehicle is one of the first prototypes because of the dense layer of camouflage, as well as some undefined body parts. The interior features a roll cage and a set of Corbeau racing seats, a good idea when driving on the Nurburgring at high speeds. Naturally, the production model will have a luxurious interior, and the roll cage and Corbeau seats will probably stick to racing cars.
According to company insiders, the 2018 Range Rover Sport Coupe is based on the Land Rover D7u platform, and is codenamed L560. Both of these facts will not matter to its customers, as they will simply see the British contender in the BMW X6/Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe segment.
The Coupe version of the Range Rover Sport comes with a significantly lower roofline, as well as more sporty angles on its body. Sources say this model will not be available with a seven-seat option, which is understandable since we are talking about a car that will have “coupe” in its name, even though it will be far from what a sane person would understand is a coupe.
According to unnamed company insiders, Land Rover is expected to fit the 2018 Range Rover Sport Coupe with the first inline-six engine of the Ingenium family.
The entry-level variants of the car could even feature a four-cylinder engine, while the top of the line model, the SVR, is expected to have a supercharged V8. Thanks to this generous engine variety, the Range Rover Sport Coupe will have one of the broadest engine options available on the market today.
