How do you improve on perfection? Well, nobody knows, because nobody’s achieved it yet, but the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class came damn near close. So the facelift scheduled for a 2017 release is making changes with what can only be described as baby steps.
We already know the new limousine will get a new set of headlights, which Mercedes-Benz does its best to cover as much as it can without making the new S-Class as blind as a bat once night falls. Despite its best efforts, we know it will come with three LED strips on the inside that will act as the daytime running lights, while on the outside, there are several LED clusters stacked on top of each other. These will act as the matrix system, illuminating only certain areas of the road as necessary.

The radiator grille has been alternatively under and out of camouflage, and it appears to have settled for the latter in this latest batch of photos. We can see it comes with just three chromed blades, but the overall shape seems to remain the same. The lower part of the front bumper, however, is hidden under black plastic wrapping, covering a presumably new design of the air intakes.

Mercedes-Benz was never the brand to make dramatic changes to its facelifted models, and the S-Class will fall neatly into the same pattern. The rear is virtually unchanged, maintaining the look that has since been echoed on all the other sedans - the C- and E-Class. The taillights also appear to be identical.

Mercedes-Benz has been a little more active at the interior, even though there are no spectacular changes here either. Probably the most striking one is the new steering wheel - which we’ve seen in a previous photo shooting - that now comes with a sportier look. The other major (if you can actually call it that) novelty is the unification of the two large rectangular displays under the same casing.

Mercedes-Benz is playing it safe with the S-Class, and nobody can blame them. With the BMW 7-Series threat out of the way (the Bavarians failed to impress in terms of sales), the only new model that could put a dent in Mercedes-Benz’s party is the Audi A8. And if the new Q7 is anything to go by, it has all the chances of being an extremely competitive car. But it will take more than that to take the crown away from the S-Class.
