Mercedes-Benz engineers are hard at work testing the next G-Class, and a fresh set of spyshots reconfirms the company's decision to stick to the boxy body.
The next generation of the G-Class will be wider than the current model, while retaining a similar ground clearance. Even though the design language will be largely unchanged, the interior will receive an overhaul, and so will its platform.

While the off-road abilities of the Gelandewagen are expected to be enhanced, or at least remain unchanged, the platform will be improved significantly. The German off-road legend is supposed to go on a severe diet, which could bring weight savings of up to 400 kilograms (882 pounds).

Thanks to the lighter platform and body, the legendary G-Class should be more fuel efficient, as well as better in tricky off-road situations. Furthermore, the durability of braking components, suspension, and tires will be increased thanks to the lower mass they will have to handle.

Along with the lighter body, the G-Class could come with a significant improvement in agility. It probably won't become close to a king of winding roads, but Mercedes-Benz is probably working on ways to make the next G-Wagen handle better on the pavement.

The interior of the G-Class is set to receive a consistent overhaul, as the car will get the latest technology from the premium automaker based in Stuttgart.

We are talking about taking over features from the new E-Class, along with a significant part of its instrument panel. True to tradition, Mercedes-Benz will retain the large grab handle on the passenger's side, as these spyshots have revealed.

Expect to see more spy photos of the next G-Class in the coming months, and this prototype seems to be an early variant of the next-generation off-roader from Mercedes-Benz.

Along with the changes listed above, the G-Class could also receive a pneumatic suspension, and some believe that the Gelandewagen will get a 48-volt electrical system to handle a mild hybrid setup.
