The Mercedes E-Class has gone from being the ugly duckling of the entire range to being one of the best-looking Mercedes models money can buy right now.
Well, not exactly right now, but soon, as the E-Class has just been introduced and some more months will have to pass until the first cars reach their new owners. But what that also means is that the E-Class Coupé will benefit from a very good starting point, something the previous model didn’t have.
That’s mainly because the current E-Class Coupé isn’t based on the E-Class sedan that just got replaced, but on the previous generation C-Class. So, technically speaking, it belonged to a lower segment, while the aesthetic details of the E-Class looked crammed on a car that was clearly too short for its own good.
The new one doesn’t appear to be suffering from any of these issues. In fact, the E-Class Coupé looks readier than ever to take on the BMW 6 Series, something that was previously unthinkable. And it’s not just the overall size, it’s also the way the car looks: it seems agiler, better planted and with a shape that’s a lot sleeker than what we’ve been used to so far.
Since the spotted car is wearing camouflaging foil over all of the non-transparent surfaces, it’s still impossible to decipher any clear details of the new coupé’s body. Mercedes-Benz is even keeping the front very well hidden, even though you’d expect it to be very similar to the sedan’s, if not identical. On the other hand, since leaving the camo there doesn’t hurt, why not troll all the people curious to know more about the car, right?
Besides the new platform shared with the sedan, the new E-Class Coupé brings another big piece of news: it will most definitely have an AMG version. The car hasn't yet been caught testing, so there's no telling whether the two will get fairly close launching dates. Whenever it eventually comes out, it will be powered by a tuned-up version of the 4.0-liter V8 engine delivering in the 600 hp region, which should be enough to make it seriously fast.
