The next Discovery’s prototype is still covered in heavy camouflage, but we expect it to shed some layers soon, as it will be launched sometime in 2017.

Until then, we can provide you with the first pictures of the Discovery 5’s interior. As usual with prototypes, this is not the final layout, but the first images show how Land Rover designed the center console of its new SUV.

We notice a simplified console, which focuses on the touch screen interface of the multimedia unit. Unlike other recent models that have decided to get rid of buttons on the inside, the screen is surrounded by buttons, and the climate controls are separate from the interface.

The gear selector is a rotative button, just like on Jaguar models, and it is joined by the Terrain Select system, which has the same configuration. The latter can be seen between the gear selector button (slightly raised from the console) and the arm rest.

The big, red, switches in the cupholders will not end up in production models. Buttons like those are “emergency switch” systems, which are only used if the vehicle gets in an accident or catches fire. The rest of the dash is nicely camouflaged with a thick layer, but we can still spot the metallic trim of the air vents.

It is interesting to see the new Discovery while being driven on the Nurburgring, as it shows the British brand will have a more road-oriented configuration for its SUV. However, some reports claim the Discovery will also get an off-road oriented version.

Considering the possibility that both accounts are accurate, the British brand might separate the Discovery into two model lines, one with a road-oriented stance, while the other will be more suited for off-road driving.
