Five years after a concept vehicle going by the name of Kia GT was presented, the Korean manufacturer is just about ready to reveal the production model. As fate would have it, however, things haven’t unfolded as Kia expected.
Coming courtesy of Mike via Kia-World, the image above features more than one example of the 2018 Kia K8 in near-production guise. Internally referred to as the CK, the K8 is rumored to bear the GT handle outside of South Korea. Regarding exterior design, I’m afraid that few cues from the concept trickled down to the finished product. Nonetheless, the styling suits the Kia GT perfectly fine.

Up front we can see massive air intakes, big headlights, and what appear to be two vents in the hood. The latter visual perk is no coincidence, chiefly because a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 is supposed to lurk underneath. 395 PS (390 hp) and 394 lb-ft (534 Nm) are anticipated from the T-GDI Lambda V6, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission sending drive exclusively to the GT’s rear axle.

Underpinned by a variation of the platform on which the 2018 Genesis G70 will be based, the long-ish wheelbase is a tell-tale sign the GT will slot between the compact executive and mid-size sedan segments. Despite the sloping roofline, there’s no denying passengers have plenty of headroom at their disposal, plus an adequate amount of legroom. I’m not too sure about the bling-bling chrome embellishment located where the front fenders meet with the doors, though.

In places like Europe, the 2018 Kia GT is a prime candidate for diesel power. The fuel economy-focused engine could come in the form of a 2.2-liter CRDi from the Sorento SUV. Maximum output for the oil-chugging mill is a round 200 PS (197 horsepower) and 441 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque available between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. Hearsay suggests a manual transmission could also make the cut.

Watch this space for new info on the 2018 Kia GT as soon as the manufacturer takes the veil off its coupe-like rear-wheel-drive sedan with sporting credentials.
