The third of four video teasers depicting the 2018 Kia GT has been released. From it, Kia underlines that the four-door rear-wheel-drive sedan with coupe cues has a helluva lot of potential.
Sporty cars were never the specialty of Kia. Even the Cee’d GT, with its 1.6 T-GDI churning out 204 PS (201 horsepower), isn’t a full-fledged hot hatchback. The soon-to-debut GT, however, promises to break the mold.
The two hood scoops, for example, are a clear indicator that the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 lurking in the engine bay needs plenty of air to get up to boost and cool down when spirited driving turns to commuting. Speaking of the belly of the beast, the six-cylinder engine is said to produce at least the same numbers it does in the luxed-up Genesis G90: 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft.
While on the subject of get-up-and-go, previous teasers hint towards a top speed of approximately 244 km/h (151 mph), a redline that starts at 6,500 rpm, and a sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) doable in 5.1 seconds. Other than the scoops, four exhaust pipes clustered in pairs are another way of saying, “We, the undersigned, are confident that this car is really fun to drive.”
The rear-wheel-drive sedan from Kia is expected to pair its 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddles behind the steering wheel. On the other hand, there’s no info about offering a traditional stick shift. In Europe, where the GT could be offered with a turbo diesel engine because that’s how Europe rolls, a manual would make plenty of sense.
On that note, the dedicated page for the Kia GT features a timer that ticks away like clockwork. According to it, the make-or-break moment for Kia’s sporting ambitions is Sunday, January 8, 2017. That’s one day prior to the start of the media preview at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
