2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake Teased, To Introduce New Ingenium Engine

Launched last year at the NYIAS, the all-new Jaguar XF is missing something. That something is expected to surprise us at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, then go on sale in the latter half of next year. Indeed, that something is the 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake.

The British manufacturer didn’t have anything new to boast about at this year’s edition of the Paris Motor Show, but then again, Jaguar let it slip that an all-new XF Sportbrake is in the making. Besides words, Jaguar teased the upcoming model during a presentation today. What we can see in the teaser pic is just a pre-production prototype with a secret under its long, sexy hood

Three years after the 2.0-liter Ingenium turbo diesel was introduced to great acclaim, Jaguar will follow up with a high-octane variant. Not much is known about the gasoline-fed Ingenium, at least not at the time being, but the British manufacturer describes it as being the most advanced gasoline engine it had ever developed. Goodies such as an electrohydraulic valvetrain and a twin scroll turbo with ceramic ball bearing are on the menu as well.

Just like its sedan counterpart, the second-gen Jaguar XF Sportbrake will make extensive use of aluminum, thus bringing the weight down considerably when compared to its predecessor. If the sedan’s recipe trickles down to the five-door station wagon, that could translate into a 418 lbs (190 kg) drop in curb weight. Other than dieting, better torsional rigidity is also a given.

Regarding cargo capacity, it’s safe to assume that the 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake will trump its predecessor’s 550 liters (19.42 cuFT) with the rear seats up and 1,675 liters (59.15 cuFT) with them folded. Besides practicality and efficiency, the XF Sportbrake will also be available with a orce-fed V6 like the one in the F-Type. If Jaguar can make a case for it, a more powerful XFR-S Sportbrake could also be offered later in the model’s lifecycle.
