2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Spied in Coupe & Convertible Form, Rear Wings Galore

Starting with the C3 Corvette, the ZR-1 designation came forth to make Corvette ownership a hell of a lot more interesting. A heck of a long time after that, the C4 ZR-1 and C6 ZR1 kept the flame alive. For the C7, however, the ZR1 handle is synonymous more ponies than the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and its blown V8.

Spied testing in Michigan, by an IndianAutosBlog reader, the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is a brute that promises heaps of oomph and plenty of downforce. In a way, the C7 ZR1 is the best thing that could happen now that the Dodge Viper ACR is going out of production. Then again, do take a good long look at the following video.

As you can see, there are three prototype sporting manufacturer plates. The first of the lot, with a red roof and red mirrors, is boasting the most aggressive wing I’ve seen on a production Corvette. Then there are the doors, which appear to be composite. After the full-fat C7 ZR1, we’re able to see the convertible version with a rear wing that differs in design (and downforce potential). And finally, the third and last prototype of the C7 ZR1 comes in the form of a coupe with what appears to be a third rear wing design.

Three prototypes, three types of wings. I’m just as baffled as you by this find. Other than the aero-conscious mods, the C7 ZR1 is also expected to get more firepower than the C7 Z06. With 650 horsepower, 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) and a 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) run doable in 2.95 seconds, the Z06 is supercar quick. The upcoming ZR1 variant will be even more of that, thank you very much!

While rumors peg the LT4 V8's output to 700 horsepower or so, some voices suggest that Chevrolet will go for the twin-turbo LT5 V8 that’s expected to motivate the C8 Corvette in mid-engine configuration. Would you care to guess which of the two is the wilder and less likely supposition? On that note, the best bet for the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 from the C7 Z06, modified to churn out Hellcat-shaming horsepower.
