2018 BMW M2 CS Laps Nurburgring, Reportedly Getting M4 Engine and Suspension

Do you remember the spiced-up BMW M2 prototype we showed you lapping the Ring earlier this month? There's a fresh rumor surrounding it, one that seems to deliver extremely sweet news. M4 tech infusion news, that is.

The M2 could skip both the GTS and the CSL badges we expected it to grab, as BimmerToday writes. Instead, the CS moniker would be adopted, with the dropping of the final L, which stood for lightweight, being legitimate.

How so? Well, the 2018 BMW M2 CS is expected to drop its twin-scroll, single-turbo straight six, replacing it with new version of the N55 twin-turbo inline-six that currently animates the M3 and M4.

In order to prevent cannibalization risks, the 3.0-liter unit could be downtuned to around 400 ponies, leaving a gap of 25+ hp between the M2 and its bigger brothers - the M3 and M3 can already be had with the Competition Pack, which boosts output from 425 to 444 hp. And while the M3's mid-cycle revamp hasn't brought a power premium for the "standard" car, we'll have to see what the recently-spied 2018 M4 facelift has to offer - we do expect this to focus on lightweight M4 GTS parts rather than build muscle, but we can't be sure for now.

Speaking of upgrades outside the engine compartment, the M2 CS could also receive M4 suspension components.

While the scheme may sound insane to an untrained aficionado, it's nothing new. In fact, the most recent example of this comes from Porsche, which gifted the Cayman GT4 with 911 GT3 suspension and a 911 Carrera S engine, albeit towards the end of the Neunelfers' pre-facelift life cycle.

This rumor, which should see the M2 CS landing late next year, only adds more high-octane fuel to the M2 fire, as we recently also discussed the possibility of an M2 Convertible, thanks to purportedly leaked images.

And while we wait for BMW to express its compact sportscar intentions, here's the spy clip of the souped-up M2 lapping the Green Hell again.
