BMW has revealed the all-new 5 Series this year, but its Touring version still awaits its unveiling.
Until that happens, we have a fresh set of spyshots for you, which show the next 5 Series Touring with a lot less camouflage than before. Since the G30 5 Series was already revealed, there was no point in continuing to hide the front of the German wagon. Evidently, the main difference between the Touring and the Sedan, which is found at the rear, is still concealed.

BMW will not hold on to the secret behind the G31 5 Series Touring’s look, because the brand wants to sell it and make money as soon as possible. We expect to see it in production guise ahead of January 2017.

You already know that the new G30 5 Series got the CLAR platform from its big brother, the 7 Series. The same platform will be employed on the 5 Series Touring, which is expected to come with all the options and powertrains from the sedan. However, the existence of the M5 Touring is still uncertain.

BMW has not offered a 5 Series Touring in M guise for many years, and there’s a good chance that the Germans will not change their minds. Instead, the F11 5 Series Touring did get the best possible chassis tuning, but without the fancy go-fast bits from the M division.

Well, some say that the new 5 Series Touring is going to change this “tradition” without an official badge. Instead, a 2017 or 2018 BMW M550i Touring is on the table, and it could end up being faster than an equivalent F10 M5. After all, the 2017 M550i sedan does beat the “regular” F10 M5 from 0 to 62 mph.

The trick behind the M550i’s performance is the xDrive system, which helps it off the line faster than an M5. Things can become tricky for regular M5 drivers if an M550i comes into the picture, because they share the V8 engine that acts as a basis for the F10 M5, but the M550i has all-wheel-drive to enhance both performance and grip.
