It’s no longer news that the upcoming BMW 1 Series will undergo a drastic changeover, migrating from the architecture it uses today to the UKL platform that will make it more profitable and easier to build.
However, using the same platform as the new MINI models and the 2 Series Active Tourer implies that there will be one crucial change: the drivetrain. Instead of sending the power to the rear wheels, the new model will be powering the front axle, turning into probably the second or third (after the new X1) such BMW vehicle.
That means that it will become more conventional, more in tune with all the other hatches around, like the Golf, A-Class and A3. Sure, you’ll get more space inside and the weight will drop but that element of fun the 1er had will surely be gone.
Engines will be part of the B family, having 3 or 4 cylinders and fitted with huge turbochargers that would make sure you always have plenty of torque even down low. The most powerful unit could be making over 350 HP, in an M-related or M car.
It’s hard to believe an M1 could be a possibility. After all, when BMW launched the 1M Coupe it was given that name in order to show respect to the original M1 that was and still is regarded as the only car built by the Bavarians that could come close to supercar status.
If that is to be the case, we’d bet on an M Performance vehicle like the M135i but fitted with xDrive to make sure all that power isn’t wasted on torque steering on the front axle. According to Auto Express’ ‘insider info’ we’d be wrong, as they quote an ‘M1’ is quite possible. We’d rather be reserved.
xDrive will surely be available on other models as well, not just on the range topping one and so will a hybrid version that would allow you to cover at least 50 km (30 miles) in electric power alone, that’s if technology progress won’t allow you even more range. Until then we still have to get acquainted with the LCI that is due next year.
