Audi is developing the next-generation A8, which will be the fourth since the nameplate was introduced.
The 2018 Audi A8 is slated to be revealed in late 2017, and it will be inspired by the Prologue concepts from the German brand. From a technical standpoint, the next A8 will ride on the MLB Evo architecture, which is termed MLB 2 by some. Multiple ongoing models from the Volkswagen Group use MLB Evo, including the Q7, A4, and Bentley Bentayga.
Shortly after launching the upcoming A8, the four-ringed brand is planning to start the manufacturing process of the Audi e-tron, the company’s first all-electric model.
We already know that the Audi e-tron will be an electric SUV, which will be manufactured in Belgium. It is supposedly based on the MLB Evo platform, which is already shared by the Q7 and the upcoming A8.
Audi has already confirmed that it will introduce an electric hatchback in its offer after launching the 2018 e-tron SUV, along with a luxurious sedan. The latter might be the rumored A9, but it is more likely that Audi will introduce the electric flagship sedan in the form of an A8 derivative.
The possibility of an electric version of the A8 has gained traction because of the recent cost-cutting decisions made by the Volkswagen Group.
As you might have heard, the German corporation is going through an emissions scandal, and they are trying to cut costs by leaving WRC and the WEC, along with eliminating some models from the range.
While Audi officials have not announced anything regarding the future electric flagship sedan, it has become increasingly evident that the company might not invest in an entirely new design for a saloon that will only be offered with electric propulsion.
Instead, Audi might offer an electric version of the A8, which would become the flagship sedan that has already been confirmed.
At this time, this is simply speculation, but Audi has everything in place to make an electric version of the A8, and it can be done because the car already shares the platform with an all-electric model that has been approved for production.
It is just a matter of connecting the dots and creating a business case for it, which is a pretty strong deterrent for some versions of existing or future production cars.
