When Alfa Romeo wowed the world with the new Giulia (Tipo 952) in June 2015, one question on everybody’s lips came in the form of, “Is there a station wagon coming? When?” Supposedly, a family-oriented variant of the Giulia could drop by in late 2017.
This supposition comes courtesy of Automotive News Europe after a chat with the proverbial “people briefed on the matter.” Alfa Romeo and the Fiat Chrysler group have refused to comment on this subject, but the cited sources are adamant that the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sportwagon will be launched late next year. On that note, does an estate version of the Giulia actually make sense in a world dominated by crossovers and SUVs?
Wagons continue to sell well in the Old Continent. The most important markets for this body style are Germany, Italy, and the UK. Another argument in favor of the Giulia Sportwagon is that the preceding 159 and 156 could be had in this configuration. Last, but not least, it is widely believed that the Giorgio platform underpinning the Giulia is extremely versatile. As per Sergio Marchionne, the Giorgio vehicle architecture could also expand to Jeep.
Whatever the future holds for those in the market for a station wagon with Italian flair, it's certain Alfa Romeo will debut luxurious crossover SUV. Christened Stelvio, the Giorgio-based model is a similar exercise to what Maserati pulled off with the Ghibli and Levante. In its top form, the twin-turbo V6 powerplant from the Giulia Quadrifoglio will find its way in the Stelvio.
After the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the Italian manufacturer is set to debut a flurry of new models. In no particular order, these are the Tipo 962 C-segment crossover SUV, the Tipo 961 executive sedan, Tipo 963 Spider and Tipo 963 Coupe, as well as a successor for the Giulietta compact-sized hatchback.
As per Alfa Romeo’s future product plan, the MiTo won't be replaced.
