Today marks the start of production for the of the 2017 Volvo V90, a mid-size wagon described by Volvo as being a “premium estate.” And yes, the V90 is produced on the same line with the S90 and XC90.
Although it shares its wheelbase and width with the S90, the V90 is shorter. I’m surprised as well, but that’s how it is: 4,963 mm (195.4 inches) for the sedan vs. 4,936 mm (194.3 inches) for the longroof. Nevertheless, the 2017 Volvo V90 has the upper hand in terms of cargo capacity: 560 liters (19.77 cubic feet) with the rear seats in place and 1,526 liters (53.89 cubic feet) with them folded flat into the floor.

In terms of engines, there’s plenty to choose from as long as it’s a 2.0-liter force-fed four-cylinder powerplant. The lineup starts with the D4 (190 PS) and D5 (235 PS) and continues with the T5 (254 PS), T6 (320 PS), and T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid.

The latter powertrain boasts with 407 PS or 400 HP. According to the NEDC cycle, the pure electric range for the 2017 Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine family wagon with premium credentials is 45 kilometers or 28 miles. If you want better styling and more sportiness, the R-Design package that made its debut today is the way to go.

“While the new XC90, S90 and V90 have helped us rejuvenate the brand, Volvo’s transformation is far from complete,” declared Hakan Samuelsson, the chief exec of Volvo. “Three years from now, the XC90 will be the oldest car on the showroom floor. In other words: the new 90 series are only the start of the new Volvo.”

That’s right! No later than 2019, the Compact Modular Architecture-based Volvo 40 Series (V40, S40, and XC40) will be in dealership lots around the world. The big news, however, is that the ripen Volvo 60 Series will roll out from 2017, the first model of the lot being the 2018 Volvo XC60. Better still, all 60 Series models will be based on the Scalable Product Architecture that underpins the 90 Series (S90, V90, and XC90).
