The V40 mid-life facelift has been treated with a kind of mild negligence. Everybody expected an all-new car, but Volvo only gave it headlights. Yet these press images of the 2017 model year just had a certain pull.
We did a quick scan of the official manufacturer website from both Sweden and German. What we found were only a few interesting specs, but ones that match where the entire car industry is going.

For several decades, nearly all gasoline engines in Europe had the following displacement: 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0. But now, it's becoming trendy to have a 1.5-liter turbo. BMW has one with only three cylinders, but everybody else is going for a 4-cylinder setup.

That includes Volvo, which has dropped a new T3 into the V40 Cross Country. The output of 152 PS and 250 Nm of torque is identical to what Ford has for the Focus.

The old one V40 had a 1.6-liter for the T3 and another one for the T4 that produced 180 PS. Guess what? That one has been replaced by another industry standard: the de-tuned 2-liter turbo. As a result, output has gone up to 190 PS and 320 Nm of torque (300 Nm for FWD models).

When we began looking into the details of the 2017 V40, we didn't expect to find anything at all. However, even the diesel range has been changed a little. The D3 and D4 remain the same as before, but the D2 base model has been upsized.

Instead of the 1.6-liter turbodiesel, it shared with the S60 eco models, the V40 now has a 2-liter with 120 PS and 280 Nm of torque. Both figures are slightly higher than before.

How is this a trend? Well, Volkswagen recently stuck a 2-liter engine into basic 115 PS versions of the Tiguan and Beetle. Likewise, the Germans are about to replace the 1.4 TSI with a 1.5-liter one.

As far as we know, the only major cosmetic change is the Thor's hammer headlights. They make the V40 look like a sister car to the V90. So, Volvo, when are we going to get a CC version of the flagship wagon?
