2017 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series Earns 5 Stars for Safety From ANCAP

In 1984, Toyota launched the 70 Series of the Land Cruiser. This family of models soldiers on to this day, 32 years later. One place Toyota still sells the Land Cruiser 70 Series is Australia, where the 2017 model year is available in no less than four body styles.

Despite its old age, the Japanese manufacturer improved the breed from time to time, mainly to keep it compliant with ever-stringent emissions and safety regulations. As reported back in September, the emissions bit has been taken care of by updating the 4.5-liter turbo diesel V8 with better everything. As for safety, the Australia's ANCAP awarded the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series in Single-Cab Chassis format 35.75 points out of a maximum of 37.

That translates to a 5-start overall safety rating. The key to this perfect score is the addition of miscellaneous bits and bobs, including dual frontal airbags, side curtain airbags, and a driver knee airbag. Beyond that, the 2017 model year of the workhorse also boasts advanced seat belt reminders for both front seats. If you were also expecting sci-fi tech like autonomous emergency braking or lane support, I’m afraid that the 70 Series doesn’t have those.

Still, goodies such as electronic stability control come as standard, as does hill launch assist, electronic brake force distribution, and emergency brake assist. If it’s not obvious yet, allow me to highlight that those features are plenty enough for a utilitarian vehicle that first rolled off the production line in '80s.

“It is encouraging Toyota has responded to consumer demand, particularly from commercial and fleet buyers, and implemented design changes and safety upgrades to improve the Land Cruiser safety rating,”
explained James Goodwin, ANCAP’s head honcho. “This competitive pressure has resulted in a two-star jump for the Land Cruiser 70 and will have a tangible effect on the safety of work sites and more broadly, Australasia’s vehicle fleet.”
