It has been 50 years since the Toyota Corolla was introduced in the Land of the Rising Sun. Half a century and 44 million units later, the Japanese brand is toasting to its success with a special edition and an inside-and-out facelift focused on safety.
Now on sale from $18,500 before adding destination and delivery, the 2017 Toyota Corolla is available in 10 exterior colors and 8 trims. Regardless of model, the Corolla continues to be offered with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder mill and a continuously variable transmission. Other than the 86 sports car-like front grille and redesigned headlight cluster, the L, LE, and LE Eco grades benefit from Bi-LED headlights, while “complex-LED” headlights come standard on better equipped trim levels such as the SE, XSE, and XLE.

For the model year 2017, the entry-level Toyota Corolla L adds a reversing camera. LE and XLE models benefit from 16-inch wheels, while plusher XE and XLE models get 17-inch alloy wheels. In the case of the Toyota Corolla SE 50th Anniversary Special Edition, special paint and trim are standard, as are a moonroof, Smart Key system, and Entune Audio Plus.

As far as the cabin is concerned, model year 2017 updates include new color schemes (Almond, Ash/Dark Gray, Black/Brown), as well as what Toyota calls Softex sport seats with Vivid Blue, Orange Zest, and Black premium fabric inserts in the SE. The climate control panel has also been redesigned, along with the circular air vents. Regarding entertainment, the Corolla has come a long way since the AM radio of the first generation.

As standard, the 2017 Toyota Corolla is gifted with Bluetooth connectivity and Entune Audio. Better equipped models are gifted with goodies such as satellite navigation and App Suite. The mid-range Entune Audio Plus and top-shelf Entune Premium Audio systems feature a 7.0-inch touchscreen.

On that note, the biggest leap the Corolla has made for 2017 is safety. This facelift adds Toyota Safety Sense-P technology, integrating lane departure warning with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, as well as Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Protection.

The Toyota Safety Sense suite will be implemented in all Toyota and Lexus models by the end of 2017. Thus, the Japanese manufacturer will put itself four years ahead of the model year 2022 target for vehicle safety.
