While Subaru may try to convince us that the 2017 model year Impreza has been redesigned inside and out, the shape, styling, and feel are unmistakably Subaru. It’s a familiar sight and that’s good from my point of view. It’s good because Subaru hasn’t altered the recipe that makes the Impreza great.

Speaking of which, this is the fifth generation. It follows the fourth, which started production in 2011. And compared to the fourth, the 2017 Subaru Impreza in sedan form can be summed up as follows: larger everything, and an honest-to-goodness front grille. Yes, it has halogen lights as standard. Yes, the interior isn’t something to write home about. Yes, the taillights are slightly oversized. You know what, though? I wouldn’t have it any other way because an Impreza is all about being dependable and fun to drive.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anything about what’s under the hood or show you pictures of the interior at the moment. In less than a day, I promise I will. If you insist, I can tell you that it comes with Symmetrical AWD as standard, it has a more spacious cabin (including more legroom for the rear passengers), it is a lot safer and stiffer than the 2016 model year Subaru Impreza, it rides on the Subaru Global Platform, and the pictured vehicle has a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine under the hood.

On the handling front, we’re expecting an improvement because the chassis is 70 to 100 percent more rigid than the current platform and it has a lower center of gravity. Oh, nearly forgot to mention this - the 2017 Subaru Impreza benefits from an increase of 40 percent over the current model regarding impact energy absorption. That’s about it for now. Stay close for the full report in a few hours' time.
