smart, the car brand started by Daimler and Swatch, has introduced a few updates for the 2017 model year of the fortwo, which will be available starting this fall.
Customers in the USA will be able to order the Sport package for the Coupe and Cabrio models of the smart fortwo. These packages bear the “Brabus” name on the body, but performance enhancements are not on par with what the German brand usually provides for Mercedes-Benz models.
Instead, the Brabus Sport Package for the smart fortwo is a $1,900 option that brings styling accessories and a few mechanical changes. The first of them is a sports suspension, which lowers the ride height by a formidable 0.4 inches (10 millimeters) compared to the standard model. Anything lower, and the fortwo would probably become “stanced” from the factory, something any automaker wants to avoid.
The changes to the smart fortwo’s suspension do not end here, as the car also gets a stiffer anti-roll bar and a Brabus-reconfigured damping system. The latter probably includes different spring rates and modified shock absorbers. Brabus says the changes bring a sporty ride and an improvement in both driving dynamics and handling.
The other mechanical change to the smart fortwo range introduced by the Brabus Sport Package comes in the form of a set of alloy wheels of the Monoblock IX kind.
The front rims have a diameter of 16 inches, while the rears get 17-inch wheels. Accordingly, Yokohama summer performance tires are fitted, with the fronts being 185/50/R16, while the rears are 205/40/R17.
Brabus’ sport package for the smart fortwo range does not end here, as it features multiple design changes. First of all, the new alloy wheels bear Brabus’ “B” instead of the usual smart logo, and the rear bumper integrates an air diffuser to help keep things steady when the fortwo nears its v-max. Furthermore, the front of the car gets a new spoiler, as well as a rear apron painted in the selected body color.
Once inside, occupants will discover a three-spoke Brabus steering wheel, as well as Brabus logos on the handbrake lever and gear knob. Depending on the upholstery, individual elements are added.
The package is refined through a set of brushed stainless steel sport pedals with rubber studs for grip. If customers choose the Twinamic transmission, they will also get paddles on the steering wheel to shift gears.
