2017 Renault Koleos Spied Driving on the Streets of Frankfurt

After launching the fourth-generation Clio, Renault continued to up the ante with the Kadjar crossover and the Talisman. The latter is the model that replaces the Laguna and, from the looks of it, it's a versatile package. Better still, the best is yet to come in the guise of the 2017 Renault Koleos. So what does this mysterious new Renault hold in store for us?

For starters, we know that it will make use of the Nissan X-Trail's CMF-CD platform. As such, we're dealing with a crossover that aims to blend the practicality of a family hauler with the comfort of a D-segment SUV. We hear that it will boast seven seats, but there's no confirmation whether the third row of seats will be offered as standard equipment or not.

Spotted by Facebook user Cristian Omat in downtown Frankfurt, Germany, the 2017 Renault Koleos you can admire in the two-pic gallery below rides higher, is wider, and more square-shaped than the Kadjar. The modern Renault grille with the oversized logo is featured, but the proportions of the bodywork are bigger.

Look more closely and you'll see that we're dealing with a headlights-LED daytime running lights cluster design that resembles that of the recently presented Talisman. Around the rear, the liftgate is ginormous by Renault standards. As for the shape and size of the rear quarter windows, it's obvious that this prototype is a seven-seater crossover, not a strict five-seater like the surprisingly spacious Kadjar.

Speaking of frugality, don't expect the 2017 Renault Koleos to borrow the CVT of the third-generation Nissan X-Trail. As it's the case with the French manufacturer, an EDC double-clutch automatic is the way to go. Look forward to that transmission offered as an option over a standard 6-speed manual. Engine-wise, we're not holding our breath for anything more than a 1.6-liter turbo petrol with 163 horsepower on tap, joined by a 1.6-liter turbo diesel that we expect to be offered in 130 and 160 horsepower forms.

P.S.: I still can't figure out why this 2017 Renault Koleos (or Grand Kadjar according to the rumor mill) wears Stuttgart license plates. Is Renault operating an R&D center in the realm of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz?

P.S. 2: Why did Renault choose Frankfurt of all places in Europe, especially when you consider that the all-new Megane is slated to make its debut at the IAA 2015 in September? This is a curious matter, alright...
