2017 Renault Koleos II Debuts in China to Global Audience

After a fairly disappointing first-generation Koleos, the second generation proves that Renault has listened to our boos and hisses. Ladies and gents, put your hands together for the new flagship of the French manufacturer’s lineup.

The Renault Koleos II is a far more muscular and aesthetically pleasing affair than its predecessor. Thanks to a total length of 4,678 mm (184.17 inches) and a wheelbase of 2,710 mm (106.69 inches), the second generation of the Koleos is a far larger proposition than the first one. The mid-size model boasts a ground clearance of 213 mm (8.38 inches) and segment-leading cabin space, including 289 mm (11.37 inches) of rear knee room.

“Today in Beijing, we mark the world premiere of the all-new, flagship SUV Renault Koleos,” declared Renault head honcho Carlos Ghosn at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. “Koleos has been completely re-engineered with powerful styling, unique features and full SUV capability.” By re-engineered, Carlos is implying that this is a Nissan X-Trail with a Renault badge up front and an interior that is borrowed from the Talisman.

Of course, the Koleos II will be available with a 4x4 system that features three operating modes: 2WD, 4WD Auto, and 4WD Lock. In terms of engines, I’d like to tell you more besides what Renault is willing to share at the present moment, as in “new engines.” My two cents go on the four-cylinder powerplants Nissan offers for the European-spec X-Trail: 1.6-liter DIG-T turbo petrol with 163 PS and 1.6 dCi turbo diesel with 131 PS.

The Renault Koleos II will be assembled in Wuhan, China, for the Chinese market and in Busan, South Korea, for 79 other markets. Speaking of which, the first units will find their way to Australia, Turkey, the Gulf States, and some Latin American countries in the third quarter of 2016. Europe and Russia will get their share of the 2017 Renault Koleos at the beginning of the upcoming calendar year.
