When Porsche launched the Macan at the end of 2013, the more skeptical among us were like, “That’s an Audi Q5 with a different badge. Preposterous!” Happily for Porsche, the skeptics were proven badly wrong by how trigger-happy the Macan can get.
In Turbo form, the compact luxury crossover SUV develops 400 PS (395 horsepower) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft), enough get-up-and-go to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 165 mph (266 km/h). Now, though, there’s a new king of the hill in this vehicle segment. Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hand together for the slightly better Porsche Macan Turbo with Performance Package.
Despite the somewhat uninspired name, this thing is described by Porsche as being the crossover to ignite your senses instantly. I’m not too sure about the emotional aspect of a jacked-up car that can seat five, but Porsche is not far off from the truth. After all, this kind of Macan is one-tenth quicker to 62 mph than a Ferrari 360 Modena.
Let’s go through the specs: 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with a little badge affixed to it that reads “Exclusive Powerkit,” 440 PS (434 HP), 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) available between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm, 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds, and on to a maximum velocity of 272 km/h (169 mph). Pricing for this bucketload of go-faster credentials? It’s... wait for it... $86,445 sans delivery and handling. In its domestic market of Germany, the Macan Turbo with Performance Package is €91,143.
The peppered price tag adds more than just go-faster credentials. If, however, you want more than what comes as standard, Porsche is only happy to offer a solution. Dubbed the Turbo Exterior Package, this suite of mods include 21-inch 911 Turbo design wheels, LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus, and so forth. Then there’s the Turbo Interior Package, which adds lots of black leather and lots of Alcantara, as well as carbon fiber trim. On that note, the sky's the limit.
The Macan Turbo w/Performance Package is fine and all, but we're itching for a hell-bent for leather Porsche Macan Turbo S. The German manufacturer should consider an even faster Macan variant, especially now that BMW works on the X3 M, and Mercedes-AMG on a GLC with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
