2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Spied in Black with Even Less Camouflage

You can begin counting the days left until the new E-Class makes its official debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January next year: there are a little more than the number of fingers on both of your hands, but we’re slowly getting there.

The E-Class has always been a very important model for Mercedes-Benz, and the fact that it chose an American venue for its launch says a lot about the importance the German company places on this market.

Mercedes-Benz has played it safe with the W213 E-Class and has decided to go for a design that’s similar (some might say “identical”) to the bigger S-Class and the smaller C-Class. If you ignore the fact that it has a slightly better-developed twin and an underdeveloped one, the new E-Class is certainly a very beautiful car in that elegant, distinctively Mercedes-Benz way.

The interior is also a mix between its two neighbors, but there’s still a debate going on about the instrument cluster: is it going to be all-digital like in the S-Class, or will it use analog gauges? The first set of images we got suggested the latter to be true, but a more recent sighting gave us some hope. In any case, one thing is certain: at least the standard version of the E-Class will have an analog instrument cluster, while a digital one might be an option.

Back on the outside, the E-Class is not exactly a sporty-looking car, but neither was the S-Class and look how well the Mercedes-AMG S63 presents itself - even though, let’s face it, the Coupe makes a lot more sense. The E-Class will see its share of AMG models, but the engine they’ll use is still anyone’s guess - the contenders are the old 5.5-liter V8 and the new 4.0-liter V8.

Now that we’ve touched the subject of powerplants, it’s worth saying the E-Class will use a host of 2.0-liter four-cylinder units and 3.0-liter inline-sixes. Like BMW, Mercedes-Benz is developing its own range of modular engines that use the same 0.5-liter cylinder as reference. So bye-bye to the old 2.1-liter diesel, you won’t be missed.

There is no exact info on the power offered by these new engines, but we do know the new 9G-TRONC nine-speed automatic will be used, making the most of the engine output while maintaining a low fuel consumption level. This efficiency will be helped by a hefty weight reduction over the outgoing model, the new E-Class shedding about 220 pounds (100 kg).
