The first generation of the Discovery was nothing more than the Range Rover’s country bumpkin cousin. Then the second model came along, veering off from its forerunner’s agricultural stigma with better styling and more premium features. For the third-gen Discovery, Land Rover has enhanced the plush SUV all around.
Based on the same lightweight but rigid unibody platform as the Range Rover Sport, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery saves up to 1,058 pounds (480 kilograms) compared to its predecessor. Now classified as a full-size SUV with “seven full-sized adult seats,” the Discovery will go on sale from Spring 2017, holding a retail price of £43,495. In the U.S., pricing starts from $49,990.

Also dubbed “the best family SUV in the world,” the Discovery got a whole lot smarter for its third generation. There’s a phone app that lets you fold the seats, then there’s a powered tailgate that can hold up to 660 pounds (300 kilograms) or three adults. Tech-savvy highlights include up to 9 USB ports, Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 8 devices, 12 advanced driver assistance systems, and a feature for off-road junkies that’s baptized All-Terrain Progress Control.

Speaking of off-road capability, ground clearance is rated at 283 millimeters (11.1 inches), which is 43 mm (1.69 in) more than the Discovery 4. The Disco can also handle the wet stuff thanks to a maximum wading depth of 900 mm or 35.4 in, which is 200 mm or 7.8 in more than before.

On the oily bits front, four- and six-cylinder force-fed engines will be available at launch. The range starts with an 180 PS (178 hp) 2.0-liter Ingenium Td4 turbo diesel, continues with a 240 PS (237 PS) twin-turbo version of the same engine, and climaxes with two V6 powerhouses. The gasoline-fed unit is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with 340 PS (335 hp) on tap, while the turbo diesel V6 is good for 258 PS (254 hp) and an adequate 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque.

S, SE, HSE, and HSE Luxury are the trim levels available for the model year 2017. Regarding exterior customization, the all-new Land Rover Discovery is available in 17 exotic-sounding paint finishes, as follows: Silicon Silver, Namib Orange, Fuji White, Santorini Black, Loire Blue, Aintree Green, Firenze Red, Corris Grey, Indus Silver, Scotia Grey, Kaikoura Stone, Montalcino Red, Yulong White, Carpathian Grey, Aruba, Farallon Black, and Waitomo Grey.
