The most spacious Land Rover of them all is about to get an all-new generation on September 29, during the Paris Motor Show. Slated to be labeled LR5 in the U.S., the next-gen Land Rover Discovery has been spied in Germany with minimal camouflage.
The most revealing spy photographs yet show us that the Disco will borrow a handful of styling cues from its smaller brother, the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The C-pillar is especially similar in design. However, the headlights, tail lamps, front grille, and LED daytime running lights incorporated low into the front bumper are heavily inspired by those of the Discovery Vision Concept.
From a design standpoint, the third generation (or fifth iteration) of the Land Rover Discovery has little to do with the outgoing model. Happily, however, the split tailgate and clamshell hood will soldier on. What does it for me, however, are the vertical air intakes sculpted into the front bumper.
As far as the interior is concerned, a big touchscreen infotainment system dominates the center console. Below it, we’re able to tell that the Discovery 5 will adopt the trademark gear selector button that’s all the rave down at Jaguar Land Rover. Hearsay has it the all-new Disco will also be available in SVX flavor, which means that serious off-road kit is in the offing.
The platform on which the 2017 Land Rover Discovery rides is a variation of the PLA (Premium Lightweight Architecture) from the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. What that means is bye-bye integrated body-on-frame, hello unibody. In addition to this change, the next-gen Disco will be available with the four-cylinder turbo diesel that was just added to the Range Rover Sport. The Ingenium engine has 240 PS (237 hp) and 500 Nm (367 lb-ft) to offer.
These said, the long-due 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 / 2018 Land Rover LR5 is just around the corner. Do you like what you see in these spy photograhps or would you rather enjoy a more traditional approach?
