2017 Kia Sorento Crashes Its Way to Earn Top Safety Pick+ Rating

Kia dubs the Sorento as being the perfect gateway vehicle. The truth of the matter is, the Sorento is a mid-size crossover with bundles of value for money. More than that, it’s super safe.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crashed multiple examples of the 2017 Kia Sorento and, as expected, the cheap and cheerful crossover passed all tests with flying colors. The Top Safety Pick+ was awarded due to the addition of an automatic braking system. Speaking of this feature, the IIHS has rated the optional front crash prevention system ‘superior.'

Equipped with it, the 2017 Kia Sorento avoided a collision in both the 12 mph (20 km/h) and 25 mph (40 km/h) crash tests. Moreover, the system meets the criteria of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. By comparison, the 2016 model year of the mid-sized crossover boasts a traditional warning system that can’t avoid collisions on its own.

That’s all nice and jolly, but how did the Sorento fare in the most recurrent crash scenarios? Just like the 2016 Kia Sorento, the 2017 model year prides itself on ‘good’ ratings from head to toe. Be it structure and safety cage, injury measures, restraints, kinetics, whatever, the Sorento is undeniably safe.

“These results are a clear indication that Kia places a high priority on safety by offering advanced crash avoidance technologies and enhancing vehicle structure through the use of advanced high-strength steel,”
said Orth Hedrick of Kia Motors America. “We are proud that the Sorento received strong ratings across the board, and having earned the prestigious TSP+ award bolsters our strong safety record and the integrity of our products.”

Pricing for the 2017 Kia Sorento has yet to be announced, but I’m much obliged to tell you the 2016 MY starts from $25,995 and tops at $42,395. Incidentally, the entry-level model has the best fuel economy of the lot, returning 21 mpg (11.2 l/100 km) city and 29 mpg (8.1 l/100 km) highway.
