Kia’s 2017 Sedona minivan has earned the Top Safety Pick + distinction from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The best rating possible from the IIHS was awarded to the Sedona with the Autonomous Emergency Braking System, which is meant to help avoid frontal collisions by warning the driver and applying the brakes if there’s no reaction.

The addition of this system to the 2017 Kia Sedona brought the TSP+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

As the press release regarding the distinction notes, the addition of the AEB system in the 2017 Kia Sedona offering boosted the front crash prevention rating of this model from “basic” to “superior,” which is an essential element to obtain the prized distinction.

Other requirements of this award include getting the “good” rating in five crashworthiness tests, as well as an “advanced” or “superior” rating in the front crash prevention test.

Kia’s Sedona is not at its first crashworthiness test with American authorities, as the NHTSA awarded it a five-star crash rating in 2015. The IIHS used to have this model on the Top Safety Pick, which is the second-best distinction granted by the organization.

Kia representatives say that this award comes as validation of their efforts to build better and safer cars. As Orth Hedrick, the vice president and head of product planning for Kia Motors America, stated, potential customers “often place safety at the top of their list when shopping for a new minivan.”

The Kia Sedona can seat seven passengers, but it can be ordered in an eight-seat configuration. The current generation of this model was unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show in April 2014.

Kia’s Sedona also comes with a power liftgate that is automatically activated when someone stands behind it for more than three seconds with the smart key in his or her pocket.

The minivan from Kia comes with a 3.3-liter V6 engine, and it also comes with the company’s Surround View Monitor that helps park in tight spaces.
