Essentially the jacked-up cousin of the Hyundai Ioniq, the Kia Niro isn’t merely an eco-friendly reply to the crossover craze. It is a really fuel-efficient car, as proven by two men who drove the Kia Niro 3,715.4 miles (5,979.3 kilometers) as fuel-efficient as possible.
Wayne Gerdes of Carlsbad, California, and co-driver Robert Winger of Williamsburg, Virginia, have entered the Guinness Book of Records for driving from Los Angeles to New York City on 48.5 gallons of gas. In other words, the two averaged a stupefying 76.6 mpg (3.07 liters per 100 kilometers).

And so, the 2017 Kia Niro in EX trim now holds the Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA from coast to coast. The automaker would like to underline that the vehicle wasn’t altered in any way to reduce fuel consumption even further, which is perfectly fine by me.

The thing is, however, regular people like you and me won’t buy the Niro to drive it like grandma on her way to Sunday mass. For all that, the EPA rated the Niro 50 mpg combined (52 city and 49 highway), which works out to 2 gallons per 100 miles. In ideal conditions, owners would be paying a dollar and a few cents for every 25 miles driven in the 2017 Kia Niro EX.

Be that as it may, other hybrids can do better than the Niro. Platform brother 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid boats 58 mpg combined, whereas the 2017 Toyota Prius Eco makes do with 56 mpg combined. But hey, the people want crossovers, so let them have ‘em. The Kia Niro is no slouch either, combining a transmission-mounted electric motor (43 hp) with a 1.6-liter engine.

Pricing for the U.S. market has yet to be announced, but Kia promised that the Niro would arrive at dealers in the first quarter of 2017. Five trim levels will be available at launch: Launch Edition, FE, LX, EX, and the Touring.
