2017 Jeep Compass Spied In the Buff, Mixes Grand Cherokee With Fiat Toro Styling

A decade after the Compass made its debut alongside the Patriot MK, there’s a new kid on the block. Also called Compass, the newcomer appears to be a fair amount larger than its forerunner.

Courtesy of Instagram user walter_g_oliveira and the carparazzi at Autoo, this is our first uncamouflaged taste of the all-new Compass before its planned debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. Spied on the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil during a photo and filming session, the 2017 Jeep Compass compact SUV is, from a design standpoint, better than the fugly first-gen model.

From the profile, it’s easy to notice that the all-new Compass has borrowed a handful of styling cues from the Fiat Toro. The way the C-pillar kinks upward, the squared wheel arches, the chromed detail that starts from the A-pillars and extends across the bottom part of the windshield, these elements make for a pretty handsome SUV. Regarding the front fascia, the 2017 Compass is inspired by the Grand Cherokee. As for the rear end, the taillights graphics are a bit of a disappointment, even when compared to the Renegade.

Speaking of the entry-level Renegade, the 2017 Jeep Compass is riding on the same platform as its smaller brother. The FCA Small Wide 4x4 backbone also underpins the Fiat Toro pickup truck, so go figure why the Compass’ profile resembles the workhorse. On the oily bits front, the U.S.-spec model should be available with a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine or a 2.0-liter turbo.

In Europe, it’s a given that the 2017 Jeep Compass will also be available with a 2.0-liter MultiJet turbo diesel with 140 PS (138 horsepower) on tap. To be offered in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations, the top-of-the-line transmission will come in the form of the ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic.

The 2017 Jeep Compass is slated to start production for the U.S. market at the Toluca Car Assembly plant in Mexico on January 30, 2017.
