While Fiat Chrysler is working hard on the development of the JL Wrangler and next-generation Ram light-duty pickup truck, this year will see the debut of another hot asset of the Italo-American manufacturer. As expected, the replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot will make its debut at the LA Auto Show.
The Compass and Patriot alike slot under the Wrangler as the entry-level models of the Jeep lineup. In production since 2006, both the Compass and Patriot are in dire need of a replacement. To cut down on costs and streamline production, Jeep will bring forth only one model to take on whatever the compact crossover SUV segment throws at it.
With the Compass and Patriot scheduled to end production on December 23 at the Fiat Chrysler Belvidere plant, the path is laid out for the 2017 Jeep Compass. Instead of the old PM / MK platform Chrysler has borrowed from the 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander, the all-new sport utility vehicle is expected to be based on Fiat Chrysler's tried-and-true Small US Wide 4x4 platform.
The backbone of the Jeep Renegade is a great building block for the 2017 Jeep Compass. After all, the Trailhawk version can hold its own in off-road situations thanks to 8.7 inches of ground clearance, underbody skid plates, and extremely capable 4x4 system. Also new for the Compass is the 2.0-liter turbo-four. This engine will also be offered in the next-gen JL Wrangler.
Other than the 2017 Jeep Compass, the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show will be the place where other automakers are slated to make significant announcements. "Among the more than 20 world debuts" we'll see introductions from names such as Alfa Romeo, Mazda, and Subaru.
General Motors, on the other hand, will bring forth two reveals from Chevrolet and the Cadillac Escala Concept. Last, but not least, we hear that Land Rover will use the 2016 LA Auto Show as the stage for the U.S.-spec Discovery 5.
