Considering that the second-generation Nissan Leaf still is still in development and the Opel Ampera-e won’t make it to the United Kingdom as a Vauxhall, it seems like the Hyundai Ioniq Electric is the best bet yet if you’re in the market for a compact-sized electric car. The Volkswagen e-Golf doesn’t count, chiefly because it starts from a whopping £31,680 and it has a pretty woeful range.

Compared to the e-Golf’s 118 miles (190 kilometers), the Ioniq Electric tops 174 miles (280 kilometers). Including the government’s grant of £4,500, the £24,495 you’ll have to pony up for the Ioniq Electric buys you the Premium specification. In the Ioniq Hybrid’s case, that’s the mid-range trim level.

As standard, goodies include automatic windscreen wipers, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and rear combination lamps, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, as well as satellite navigation. In other words, this EV is the whole nine yards.

At the top of the range, the Ioniq Electric Premium SE (£26,295) ups the ante with leather-wrapped front seats that are heated and ventilated, as well as heated rear seats, a heated leather steering wheel, a driver memory power seat, Blind Spot Detection, front parking sensors, and 16-inch alloys. Beyond that, the Ioniq Electric can be had in six colors: Marina Blue (pictured), Polar White, Phantom Black, Platinum Silver, Phoenix Orange, and Blazing Yellow.

First UK deliveries of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric will be made just as we roll into 2017. If it’s the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid you’re most interested in, that model will join the lineup in the second quarter of 2017. Regardless of powertrain, the Hyundai Ioniq is covered by a 5-year/unlimited mileage warranty. Come 2018, Hyundai will expand its lineup with a purely electric crossover SUV.
