Built in Lincoln, Alabama, and redesigned from the ground up in 2015, the third-generation Pilot is more than just a car for soccer moms. For the 2017 model year, however, Honda’s really roomy mid-size crossover SUV got a little bit better than before.
The ever-rising demand for three-row SUVs convinced Honda to update the Pilot with better phone connectivity, coming in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These features come as standard on Pilot EX and above trim levels. Also on the tech front, Honda improved the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Last, but not least, the 2017 model year of the Honda Pilot is further enhanced by the extended availability of a black interior, now available on all models finished in White Diamond Pearl exterior paint.
Slated to go on sale on November 7, 2016, the 2017 Honda Pilot is priced from $30,595 for the LX 2WD model. In base configuration, fuel economy is rated 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. Further up the food chain, the Pilot is available in LX, EX, EX w/Honda Sensing, EX-L, EX-L w/Honda Sensing, EX-L w/Navi, EX-L w/RES, Touring, and Elite grades. Only the Elite, which is priced from $47,070, comes as standard with all-wheel-drive. On other models (LX to Touring), 4WD is a $1,800 optional extra.
With comfortable seating for up to eight passengers and a downright cavernous trunk, it’s no wonder why the Pilot is so popular with the American public. When you think about it, the Pilot offers the same number of seats as the Chrysler Pacifica minivan, plus a commanding driving position and a jacked-up ride for that little bit of off-roading when the situation calls for it.
A 3.5-liter direct-injected i-VTEC V6 is the sole engine available in the Pilot, producing 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. Matched to a 6-speed automatic as standard, upper trims pride themselves on a 9-speed transmission. If it’s frugality you’re after, the best the Pilot can do is 20/27/23 mpg.
