After a one-year hiatus, the Accord Hybrid is back in business for the 2017 model year. While it may share the cool styling of the ninth-generation Accord sedan and coupe, the Accord Hybrid trumps them both in terms of fuel economy. How does 49 miles per gallon (4.8 liters per 100 kilometers) in the city sound?
The 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid isn’t impressive only in the urban jungle, the stomping ground of hybrid cars, but outside of it as well. 47 mpg (5 liters per 100 km) highway is as impressive as it gets in the mid-sized segment. To put that figure into perspective, it’s almost as good as the 50 mpg (4.7 liters per 100 km) achieved by the compact-sized 2016 Toyota Prius.
John Mendel, the executive vice prez of the American Honda Motor Co., Inc., declared, "The new Honda Accord Hybrid is the ultimate Accord - the most refined, technologically sophisticated and, of course, most fuel efficient in the lineup. With Accord already America's most popular car three years running and the best-selling midsize car to younger buyers, we think this new hybrid model will add considerable momentum for the Honda brand." Regarding pricing, nothing is official as of yet. A sub-$30,000 suggested retail price is quite possible.
"But wait a minute, isn’t 49 mpg city less than the 2015 model year Accord Hybrid’s 50 mpg city?" You are right on, sir! Here’s the thing: in 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency will revise the fuel economy numbers to bring them in line with real-world results. It’s the same thing that happened in 2008. The 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid is certified for 2017 while the 2015 MY has been tested according to the old procedures.
Some of the features exclusive to the Hybrid are exterior badging, the aluminum hood and aluminum wheels, as well as the blue highlighted LED headlights and taillights. Despite the fact that there’s a battery in there somewhere, the eco-friendly model boasts a segment-leading 13.5 cuFT (382.2 l) of trunk space. Save for a button that reads "EV Mode" on the right side of the center console, the cabin doesn’t differ from that of the regular Accord. You can find out more about the 212 HP Accord Hybrid in the release below.
