We are talking about the optional carbon fiber wheels for the new Ford GT. They are available as optional equipment, and this is the second Ford Performance vehicle offered with this kind of rim.

Some of you might remember that the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang came with this type of carbon fiber wheels as standard equipment.

On the 2017 Ford GT, the carbon-fiber wheel package is optional equipment. They come with a bare carbon finish and have a clear coat to maintain their shine.

The latest wheels developed by Ford come with improved resin compounds and advanced fiber weave, which allowed designers to provide more intricate styling for these rims.

When compared to the regular alloy wheels for the Ford GT, the carbon-fiber option reduced inertia by 25%.

Furthermore, they have increased structural stiffness, and come with a weight reduction of two pounds of unsprung weight per wheel (0.9 kilograms). Looking at the weight reduction, one cannot help being impressed by how light the alloy wheels of the Ford GT are in comparison to their carbon-fiber equivalents.

Common sense dictates that lighter wheels improve steering feel and dynamics, besides reducing wear on the steering, braking, and suspension systems. Ford also says that the new carbon fiber wheels will make the GT more silent, because the material will not act as a bell, as would the alloy wheels. Comfort will also be improved thanks to the new wheels, as the ride will be quieter, while the entire rolling train will struggle less with the same effects.

The new wheels are sized 8.5 x 20 inches for the front axle, and 11.5 x 20 inches for the rear axle, just like the alloy wheels provided as standard. Ford has not announced availability as a separate order of these parts, but we would not be surprised to find them offered as aftermarket improvements for other models that can fit 20-inch wheels.
