The country has a vast yet underdeveloped road network where potholes are always going to be a problem. So the Onix Activ joins a growing segment of cars that were nearly wiped out of extinction by the crossovers yet now thrive: the Audi allroad copycats.

The Onix also features a mild 2017 model year facelift that will be seen on all other versions of the car. The fact that it's been branded "Activ" shows Chevrolet has a uniform strategy, from South America to Korea. We are referring to the fact that the Spark/Beat city car also has an off-road version called Activ.

The transformation from mild-mannered 5-door hatchback to crossover includes an 1.18-inch (3cm) suspension lift, rugged body cladding and silver diffusers. The side skirts and 15-inch polished wheels are also unique to this model. Just like a Dacia Sandero Stepway, you also get silver roof rails and a black upper grille.

The Chevrolet Onix Activ will be available in Red Carmine Color, Black Gold Black, Orange Burning, Switchblade Silver, Graphite Grey and White Summit exterior colors. Inside, the two-tone theme is set by Jet Black and Kalahari.

While the names of the colors is very cool, this is far from being a cutting edge vehicle. Power comes only from a 1.4-liter engine that produces 98 hp on regular gas or 106 on ethanol. Maximum torque is rated at 136 Nm. Transmission choices include 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic.

Upper trim levels will benefit from the leather multifunction steering wheel, second-gen MyLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration compatibility, front airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensor (rear), and reversing camera.

Expect the Onix Activ to arrive in US showrooms... never. The car it's based on got a dismal score in NCAP tests a couple of years ago. It won't be brought to India either, although the local division has promised to launch a Beat Activ model within a year.
