11.67 seconds. That’s how much quicker the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is when compared to its predecessor. And boy, did Chevy use one hell of a driver to squeeze every little bit of performance from the supercharged monster.
At 7 minutes, 29 seconds, and 6 tenths, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is nearly as quick around the 12.9-mile (20.8 km) Nurburgring Nordschleife as the Porsche Carrera GT. If it’s cars the Camaro ZL1 beat to a pulp you’re interested in, the list includes the Porsche 911 GT2 (997), Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R, Pagani Zonda F, and the Lexus LFA.

“To be almost 12 seconds quicker than the 5th-Generation ZL1 is a testament to the advanced design and technology of the new ZL1,” notes Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser. “From the improved aerodynamics, mass reduction and 650-hp LT4 to the Magnetic Ride Control, electronic limited-slip differential and Custom Launch Control, the ZL1 was designed to take on the world’s most challenging track, making it right at home on any track, road or drag strip anywhere.”

According to Chevy, the only mods made to the Camaro ZL1 that pulled off the blistering lap time are the installation of data acquisition equipment, a roll hoop, Sparco racing seats, six-point harnesses, and that’s about it. Otherwise, Chevy is adamant that the Nurburgring car is bone stock. As you can see from the video, the car is also equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Set in Track Mode to enable Performance Algorithm Shift, the transmission is complemented by FE4 suspension with Magnetic Ride Control, a performance-oriented traction management system, Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 rubber on all four corner, and 15.4-inch Brembo brake rotors with six-piston calipers up front.

For those who would rather a more organic driving experience to the detriment of lap times, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 can also be had with a manual transmission. Also, a convertible model is available for those who prefer to kick back and enjoy the ride.

Editor's note: Remember that rumor about a 7:23:77 lap time for the ZL1? Well, it was too ambitious to begin with.
