2017 Buick Encore Gets Sculpted LEDs and Latest Tech

The third and final member of the GM subcompact crossover family has just received its due updates. We are referring to the Buick Encore, the beneficiary of 2017 features that include a full exterior redesign and a more high-tech cabin.

It's not surprising at all that the 2017 Encore looks almost identical to the new Opel Mokka X. The only major differences are the grille mesh and the side repeaters, which the Encore integrates into the mirrors.

The smallest yet also most popular Buick model in America now looks more refined thanks to a new front fascia and sharp LED headlights. Designers also installed new mirrors, updated LED taillight graphics and a chrome exhaust. New colors have also been introduced, namely Black Cherry Metallic, Ebony Twilight Metallic, and White Frost Metallic.

Overall, they did a great job in adopting Opel's design language. The old waterfall grille ruined the design of several Buick models. The Encore was introduced to the American market in 2013 and now accounts for about a third of their sales. Although Buick made no mention of the engine, we suspect nothing has changed for the 1.4 SIDI Turbo mill with 153-hp. Customers should still have the choice between a cheaper FWD model and AWD options.

The updates continue inside the crossover, where we see new trim, refreshed instrument gauges and the major highlight, an 8-inch UntelliLink system. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as OnStar 4G LTE with onboard Wi-Fi.

We consider these updates too subtle, especially when the subcompact segment is now filled with fun contenders like the Mazda CX-3. However, the Buick Encore continues to be a popular car, with demand rising 34% so far this year. Buyers of the 2017 model year should appreciate the higher quality materials, push-button ignition, contrast stitching, and new metallic accents on the steering and dash.

The baby crossover will get its new features this fall, when new pricing and technical details will be announced.
