In the world of sporty compact executive sedans, nothing beats the M3 in terms of status. But BMW, in its infinite wisdom, changed the recipe dramatically for the F80 M3 and its coupe counterpart, the F82 M4. However, not all is swell.
Expected to make its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March, the Life Cycle Impulse for the F80 M3 and F82 M4 is not what BMW fans would call a facelift. All things considered, it’s a small selection of small updates.

Earlier today, the spy photographers caught the tentatively named M4 LCI CS Special Edition on camera. Now, though, the regular M4 LCI comes into focus and, for all intents and purposes, is as tame as a sporty BMW can get. Save for the M4 GTS-like wheels, the M4 LCI doesn’t impress on a visual level.

The headlights look as basic as they come on an M4, the front bumper is nothing to write home about, the side mirrors also look unchanged, as is the rear bumper. Only the OLED-infused taillights qualify as an update, along with the M4 GTS-inspired black-painted front grille surround. I wish this was a test mule, but from the looks of it, this is a pre-production prototype.

If we take the 2016 BMW M3 LCI into consideration, the M4 LCI should also get the same output as the pre-facelift model. That’s 431 PS (425 horsepower) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) from 3.0 liters, six cylinders, and two turbos. That’s not nearly enough to pose a threat to the base Mercedes-AMG C 63, which boasts 476 PS (469 horsepower) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft).

Inside, improvements for the 2017 BMW M4 LCI are likely to include 4G LTE connectivity as an optional extra, better quality materials, and the latest version of BMW Navigation system Professional. A new line of M Performance parts would be great, at least until an all-new generation comes along.
