Introduced in 2009 and based on the F07 platform, the 5 Series Gran Turismo is the oldest member of the current BMW 5 Series family. The slow-selling hunchback from Germany will get a second chance to prove that it earns its keep with the 2017 BMW 5 Series GT, internally referred to as the G32.
Our spy photographers caught the G32 testing together with the G30 sedan in extremely cold conditions. It’s easy to observe that the all-new 5 Series Gran Turismo looks better than its predecessor thanks to a more graceful roofline and a more athletic waistline. It still features a large liftback, but that stylistic compromise had to be made if BMW wants the 5 Series GT to offer loads of legroom and headroom for the rear occupants.
The 2017 BMW G32 5 Series Gran Turismo is expected to receive an interior that will be inspired by the G11/G12 7 Series. Other than a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, the next-generation 5 Series family will most likely get the gesture-based technology of the latest iDrive infotainment system. Qi specification wireless phone charging and Wi-Fi hotspot are also on the list of features that will be available as options.
Slated to make its official debut late in 2016, the G32 will be offered in rear-wheel- and all-wheel-drive form. By using carbon fiber in the structure of the body, the weight of this luxurious hunchback should fall by up to 100 kilograms (220 lbs), thus sharpening up the driving characteristics. Under the hood of the all-new BMW 5 Series GT, you’ll find an assortment of four- to eight-cylinder engines. More specifically, everything from the 520d four-cylinder turbo diesel up to the 550i xDrive and its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 motor.
An 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission will be mated to all available engine choices. A plug-in hybrid with BMW eDrive technology will be launched later in the production cycle of the G32 5 Series GT. If we’re not mistaken, the eco-friendly family hauler will receive a similar powertrain to that of the X5 xDrive40e.
