2017 Audi A4 Earns Top Safety Pick+ Rating

Launched in June 2015, the fifth model to carry the A4 nameplate is the best compact executive car to wear the Audi badge there’s ever been. Underneath the fancy styling and premium features, the 2017 Audi A4 is a safe car in the event of a crash.

Priced in the United States from $37,300 excluding the destination charge, the 2017 Audi A4 earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The maximum safety rating was given to the all-new A4 for its first-rate crashworthiness.

The former generation of the compact executive sedan (2009 to 2016 model years) rated poor in the small overlap test because the car’s occupant structure didn’t hold up, with “intrusion into the driver's space reaching 11 inches at the footwell and the instrument panel.”

Worse still, the steering column moved upon impact and the driver door opened, two conditions that would put the driver at risk in the event of a crash. The new Audi A4, on the other hand, aced the small overlap crash test.

Another plus point goes to the standard front crash prevention system. In the 12 miles per hour (12 km/h) test, the 2017 Audi A4 avoided a collision. In the 25 miles per hour (40 km/h) test, the impact speed was reduced by an average of 22 miles per hour (35 km/h). Not bad for a no-cost option.

However, not all is alright with the latest-generation Audi A4. When the car is equipped with LED headlights and high-beam assist, the 2017 Audi A4 earns an acceptable rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The cheaper HID projector lamps earn a marginal rating.

Safety aside, there's a lot more going on about the 2017 Audi A4 as you'll find in our test drive of the European-spec 3.0 TDI quattro model. At the present moment, Audi only sells the 252 horsepower 2.0 TFSI in the United States of America.
