2016 Volvo XC90 Gets Top Safety Rating from the IIHS. Check Out the Crash Video!

We're not in the least bit surprised that the all-new Volvo XC90 got the maximum safety score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Even in its last year of life, the previous SUV held onto its excellent safety rating.

The 2016 model year seven-seat SUV was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating, which is only given to cars that achieve full scores in all crashworthiness and front crash prevention tests. Volvo's array of active safety systems was praised by the organization as well.

“Every Volvo currently rated by IIHS has earned a Top Safety Pick+, we are the only automaker that can claim that proud distinction,” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, “the XC90 is the next step in our Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by the year 2020.”

The crash footage released by the IIHS shows how dramatic an impact at just 40 miles per hour can be. Using only 1/4 of its frontal surface in the small overlap test, the XC90's left corner is blown to smithereens. It's quite enjoyable to watch crash videos, and we know Volvo owners like them more than most.

In the challenging small overlap test, the driver space "held up very well, with intrusion of fewer than 2 inches at all measured points in the driver's seating space," according to the IIHS. Dummy readings show a low risk of any significant injuries.

The IIHS award follows a decision last week by Euro NCAP, the IIHS's European equivalent, to award the XC90 five stars in its new 2015 tests. The XC90 was the first vehicle ever to score full points in the Autonomous Emergency Braking Car to Car rear-end tests.

It's pretty clear the XC90 is aimed at customers that value their lives and those of their families more than anything. There are plenty of them too, as it has exceeded Volvo's sales forecasts, with 57,000 cars sold compared to a forecast 50,000 for the entire year.
